Quotes from my Notes #4

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. -Voltaire

This is one of Gretchen Rubin’s favorite quotes, which I have now adopted. So often, we delay starting projects or habits until we can get everything perfect. But “good enough” is almost always better than “not at all” (which is what happens when we wait for perfect).

What quotes inspire your habits?

  1. I didn’t know that quotation, but fairly early into my career as a varnisher, I developed what I call my “Rule of Good Enough.” If I finished varnishing a piece, and discovered some dust had landed in it, I often would redo it. Then, an insect would land, and I ‘d do it again. Then, some silk from a cottonwood tree would show up. And so on and so on.

I finally figured out that 100% perfect just wasn’t possible. So, if I made it to 98%, I’d say, “That’s good enough.” And it always was!
